Camp Paint Rock
Hyattville, WY

The setting for this camp is a 110,000 acre ranch in north-central Wyoming, replete with steep canyons, tall mesas, and rushing streams. The Alm Foundation, a Los Angeles charity, commissioned a camp in this rugged terrain for teenagers. Through the Paint Rock Program the foundation offers academic and social support to underprivileged youths from inner city Los Angeles who begin the program at the camp. There are sixteen buildings in all, sited at the edge of a large alluvial plane, at the southern end of Paint Rock Canyon.

The design strives to harness the dramatic scale, power and beauty of the landscape. Building forms echo the natural geological forms and are inspired by fault lines: fissures open interiors to views and natural light. Many of the structures are built on steel platforms that cling to steep canyon walls. Decks, lookouts and large sliding panels at the cabins celebrate the experience of the sky and panoramic views. Each building stands independently but relates to the overall composition through a series of pathways and bridges, reinforcing through design the camp philosophy of self-reliance and leadership within an interdependent community.
