Gloucester House Gloucester, MA Gloucester House is sited on granite ledge, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The open, L-shaped plan of the house offers ocean views to the north and east, while sheltering a south facing landscape from the ocean breezes and perpetual salt spray. From the approach to the south, a sweeping roofline presents a modest and restrained elevation and intimate landscape to the street and is scaled to structures and landscapes of the neighborhood. From the south landscape one can see through the house to the water. The house burrows into the sloped site, allowing the low scaled south elevation to expand on the north side of the house where a glass expanse in close proximity to the ocean creates an immediacy of experience between the occupant and the powerful presence of the sea. The plan of the house is open, allowing sculptural rooflines to be experienced from the interior. The roof forms respond in scale to the ocean view and to the craggy rock formations of the coastline.
