Bartholomew County Veterans Memorial
Columbus, IN

Sited at the entry to Columbus, Indiana on the Bartholomew County Courthouse Square, the project is comprised of a grid with 25 limestone pillars honoring soldiers from Bartholomew County who died in 20th-century wars. With its rough, rock-cut limestone exterior, the memorial appears from a distance as a monolithic block. Up close, visitors are drawn into its thicket of columns, which creates a haven for meditation. Etched on the smooth column surfaces are the veterans' names; further within are letters and diary entries. At night, lights embedded in the memorial's base create a dramatic play of light and shadow and illuminate the columns' inner surfaces.
