International Fund for Animal Welfare, Headquarters Yarmouth, MA The International Fund for Animal Welfare works to improve the welfare of wild and domestic animals throughout the world by reducing commercial exploitation of animals, protecting wildlife habitats, and assisting animals in distress. The global headquarters for this non-profit organization will house information displays regarding worldwide projects, a 200-seat conference center and auditorium, and offices for headquarters and visiting staff. The design places a premium on environmental sensitivity and energy efficiency, and is highly responsive to the principles of the organization's mission. Planned features and systems include on-site wastewater treatment, passive solar design, and ecologically sensitive building materials. Sophisticated computer energy models informed architectural decisions regarding massing and orientation, window size and location and shading elements all were evaluated and optimized for energy efficiency. A system of trellises and light shelves shade interior spaces in summer while reflecting indirect light deep within the building. The building employs recycled materials including the steel structure, carpets, gypsum wallboard, furniture elements and other items such as rapidly renewable bamboo flooring. Advanced lighting controls including occupancy sensors, light sensors and automatic dimmers ensure that electric light is provided only when and where needed. The building is designed to achieve a gold LEED rating. Please see our Flash website at www.charlesrosearchitects.com for a more complete representation of this project. |
